        ABOUT

Formed in Buffalo, New York in 2000, Misconstruity is a progressive post-hardcore rock band composed of founding member Russ Sbriglia (vocals, guitar, bass, drums, percussion) and Rob Goc (guitar, keys). A regularly performing quartet during the early 2000s, Misconstruity has in recent years evolved into a studio-based entity centered on the continued collaboration between Sbriglia and Goc.

The band’s new LP, Critique of Pure Desire (recorded and co-produced by Jay Zubrucky), is a psychoanalytic and psychedelic odyssey through the annals of literary and filmic desire. Each of its ten songs—including the singles “Carnival,” “The Presentiment and the Verification,” “Malin génie,” and “Let Them Rot (Antigone Between the Two Deaths)”—presents a classic work of literature or film through the prism of what Lacanian philosopher

Slavoj Žižek (who is featured on “Let Them Rot”) has termed a “critique of pure desire.” Works encountered over the course of the album include Sophocles’s Oedipus Rex and Antigone, Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado” and “The Imp of the Perverse,” Herman Melville’s Pierre; or, The Ambiguities, Kate Chopin’s The Awakening, Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo, Chris Marker’s La Jetée, and Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner.

“Like if King Crimson were throwing an Eyes Wide Shut party.”
